"Cutting libraries in a recession is like cutting hospitals in a plague."
~Eleanor Crumblehulme
Libraries in the Bay of Plenty region are actively looking for opportunities to work together or assist each other in different ways.
Whakatane, Rotorua and Western Bay of Plenty Libraries are coming together to form a consortium - Infoshare BOP Libraries. They all share a common library system, Horizon, which is administered by Rotorua District Council. Together, the three libraries are looking at making significant improvements to the selection, purchase, cataloguing and processing of adult fiction.
The formation of Library/Museum units in Taupo, Whakatane and Kawerau now ensures that experience and expertise is being shared and actively encourages collaboration.
All seven libraries within the region have a formal reciprocal borrowing agreement and staff swaps and other opportunities to provide professional development have taken place this year.
This spirit of co-operation has already proven beneficial for both staff and the communities they serve.
