"Libraries are the cornerstone of Education"
~ Ruth Gotlieb
Whakatāne has seen an increase in Māori schools and groups visiting the library. There’s no doubt that this is due to the library’s support and promotion of Māori collections and related events.
Upon entering the library, visitors will notice Māori art displayed in high profile positions, an expanded and improved Māori collection and library staff increasing their use Māori mihi and Te reo Māori in general.
Collaboration with local iwi and communication with the Iwi Liaison Committee has also led to an increase of Māori themes in library events (which are also facilitated in collaboration with the museum and gallery) and an increased understanding of matauranga Māori, demonstrated by the practices of the staff and within library operations.
