With 37 branches and one mobile bus, Wellington Region's library service covers the 474,453 strong population in the cities of Wellington, Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua and the districts of Kapiti, Masterton, Carterton, South Wairarapa and the Chatham Islands.

Particular strengths are ESOL collections, information services, working alongside community groups and other Council business units. Additionally working with national and local museums and archives to deliver family and local history services and collections is a key focus. The region is embarking on an innovative and region-wide shared services initiative which includes partnership with tertiary.
