Welcome

As public library managers, we believe that public libraries are an essential part of any democratic society. They engage, inspire and inform those who use them, and they help build strong communities.

We plan to use this website to celebrate and promote the importance of New Zealand’s public libraries. You can visit the site to find out what’s happening - the latest success stories, the news, and the issues affecting public libraries.

The Association of Public Library Managers is a new organisation. We were formed in 2007 to speak on behalf of New Zealand’s public libraries. We work in partnership with other organisations such as the Library and Information Association New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) and the National Library of New Zealand.

Our key guiding document is the UNESCO Library Manifesto. We also have an APLM Strategic Plan which sets out our five main goals, and how we plan to achieve them.

There are 72 local authorities providing public library services in New Zealand. Our membership represents 67 of them. This website provides an online community for our members and the wider public library community to share their experiences and to exchange information.

Please look through the website – and let us know what you think of it by sending an email to office@aplm.org.nz We’d also love to hear about your experiences of, and thoughts about, public libraries. Please get in touch if you have anything you’d like to share with us.

Happy browsing.
