What we do

Public Libraries of New Zealand is the website of the Association of Public Library Managers Inc (APLM).

The APLM was set up in 2007 to represent the interests of New Zealand’s public libraries.  All our members are public library managers – we are the people who plan, develop and co-ordinate services at New Zealand’s public libraries.

APLM acts as an advocate for the information and library needs of the many New Zealanders who use public libraries. We work in partnership with other organisations with an interest in public libraries to:

  • Raise the profile of public libraries and public librarians
  • Demonstrate and promote the value of public libraries
  • Build strong relationships with those who fund, use and work in public libraries.

Our vision:

Our vision is to lead the development of consistently excellent public library services throughout Aotearoa New Zealand by speaking with authority on behalf of public libraries.

Our goals:

We have five main goals. They are:

1. To develop collaborative projects in public libraries throughout New Zealand.
2. To build strong relationships with those who fund, use and work in public libraries.
3. To demonstrate and promote the value of public libraries.
4. To raise the profile of public libraries and public librarians.
5. To support the people who work in public libraries.

Our Structure:

APLM is made up of a membership of Public Library Managers, representing 63 of the 66 New Zealand local authorities that provide library services. This membership is divided into nine regions, each of which has an elected representative which reports to the Executive Committee.  The Executive Committee comprises the Chair, Chair Elect, Treasurer and four other members.

Executive Committee Members:
